Ms Donna O’Keefe

Bathurst - TAFE

Donna commenced the carpentry trade course in 2006 and completed the course in 2008 she then commenced the cert 4 course in building in 2009 and completed in 2010 with a Credit pass. This was undertaken while holding down a job at her Father’s joinery/ kitchen manufacturing shop.

Donna, was always prepared to try her hardest and submit her work on time and to a very high standard, also finding time to help other students in the class if they were having trouble.

Donna has 6 children (all school age) and her husband was working as a shearer therefore away from home a lot during this time.

Her family situation makes this an amazing achievement and we feel qualifies her as a worthy recipient of the Wallace G Pooley & Keith E Downing Award.


Mr Matt Thurling

Newcastle MBA

Matt Thurling commenced employment with MBA Newcastle Group Training Pty Ltd on the 5th July 2010, and is now in his 3rd Year of a Roof Plumbing Apprenticeship.

Matt’s TAFE studies have been consistently good throughout his Apprenticeship, always achieving at the top end of his class.

Matt has some outstanding quality’s which is what make for an excellent Apprentice. He has a “can do” attitude and a “nothing is a problem” approach.

Matt’s Host Employer, Litchfield Roofing Australia Pty Ltd, services Newcastle and the surrounding suburbs completing Commercial and Industrial type projects. Litchfield highly value Matt as a Mature Age Apprentice, even opting to pay him over the award in recognition of his hard work and efforts. Director Tim Litchfield has also submitted a letter of reference regarding Matt and his performance on site.

Matt will undoubtedly be a nomination for our Newcastle Master Builders Apprentice of the Year for 2012 and the 2012 NSW Training Awards.

We also would like to thank Litchfield Roofing Australia Pty Ltd for their outstanding training and support they have shown Matt throughout his Apprenticeship.

Matt is a very worthy recipient of the Wallace G Pooley & Keith E Downing Award.

Ms Dionne Sullivan

Bathurst – TAFE

Dionne commenced an apprenticeship in the Carpentry Trade in 2010 and is currently in stage 2. She enrolled in the Cert 4 in Building course in 2011 and has successfully completed the first semester of the course gaining first place in a class of 26 students (25 male).

She has always given a first class effort in all areas of her studies and gained the respect of her fellow male students in both classes. Becoming one of the boys.

Dionne is always seeking that bit more from her teachers asking many questions to help her learning.

It has been a pleasure to have her in my class and I believe that she will be a great addition to the building industry on completion of her qualifications.

Dionne is a worthy candidate of the Wallace G Pooley & Keith E Downing Award.
